The Portuguese and Spanish words for "soccer" are FUTebol or FUTbol, respectively, and the terms for "indoor" are SALon or SALa. The organisers of the FIFUSA World Cup utilised the word FUT- SAL. When Mr Para saw this, he decided to combine the two worlds and create the world FUTSAL. After returning from the World Championship, Mr Para requested to the USMF board that the organisation's name be changed to include the new term "FUTSAL," and for some who were sceptical, he indicated that the new term had the letters "fUtSAl" (USA).

When the United States Minisoccer Federation changed its California corporate identity to U.S. Futsal Federation in 1986, it embraced the new term. The term "FUTSAL" was also trademarked in the U.S. Patent in 1989. Mr Para proposed in 1989, at an integration meeting between FIFUFA and FIFA, that the new identity that FIFA had planned for the sport in the second "FIFA Five-a-Side World Championship'' to be held in Hong Kong in 1992 be changed to FUTSAL for the third World Championship in Spain.
